Clash Royale Beginner Guide to Decks Elixir and Trophies

Clash Royale is Supercell’s real-time card battler. You build an 8-card deck, spend elixir to deploy troops and spells, and win by destroying more enemy towers than your opponent within three minutes. New players improve fastest by learning three things: a cheap, balanced deck, positive elixir trades, and when to stop pushing trophies.

How a Match Works

Each side has a King Tower and two Princess Towers. Destroying a Princess Tower earns one crown, and taking the King Tower ends the match with three crowns. If the crowns are tied when regulation ends, the match goes to overtime, where the next tower to fall decides it.

Your hand shows four cards at a time. After you play one, the next card in your deck rotates in. That rotation, called cycle, is why cheap cards matter so much.

Elixir: The Real Resource

You start with 5 elixir, and it caps at 10. It refills at roughly one point every 2.8 seconds. In the final minute, double elixir halves that time.

Sitting at 10 elixir wastes regeneration, so spend before you hit the cap. Your goal is a positive trade: use fewer elixir to answer a threat than your opponent spent on it.

Your card Cost Answers Their cost Elixir gained
Arrows 3 Skeleton Army 3 0 (tower damage bonus)
Fireball 4 Musketeer + Archers 7 +3
Mini P.E.K.K.A 4 Giant (with tower help) 5 +1
Skeletons 1 Mini P.E.K.K.A (distract) 4 +3
Valkyrie 4 Goblin Gang or Barbarians 3 to 5 0 to +1

Analyst note

Competitive decks usually average 3.0 to 4.0 elixir. Below 3.0 you cycle fast and pressure constantly. Above 4.0 you tend to leak elixir and struggle to respond to cheap pushes.

Building Your First Deck

Elixir Trade Chart

A working deck covers four roles. If one role is missing, opponents will find the gap within a few games.

  1. Win condition: the card that actually hits towers (Giant, Hog Rider, Royal Giant).
  2. Air defense: at least two cards that hit air (Musketeer, Archers, Baby Dragon).
  3. Spells: one small (Arrows, Zap) and one medium (Fireball).
  4. Cheap cycle or defense: Skeletons, Knight, Ice Spirit.

A starter build from early commons and rares: Giant, Musketeer, Mini P.E.K.K.A, Knight, Archers, Fireball, Arrows, Skeletons. It averages about 3.4 elixir. Play the Giant behind your King Tower when you have a lead in elixir, then support it as it crosses the bridge.

Use your gold on the cards you actually play. Spreading upgrades across your whole collection keeps every deck underleveled. Our “cr cards” ranking helps you decide which cards deserve your gold.

Quick steps: set up a beginner deck

  1. Open the Cards tab and pick one win condition.
  2. Add two air-targeting cards.
  3. Add one small and one medium spell.
  4. Fill the rest with cheap defenders.
  5. Check the average elixir at the top of the deck.

Trophies and Arenas

Wins earn trophies and losses cost them. Your trophy count places you in arenas, and each new arena unlocks new cards. Climbing too fast puts you against players with higher card levels than yours.

Hit a losing streak of three? Stop playing ladder. Try friendly battles with your clan or event modes to test changes without losing trophies. Steady upgrades on one deck will push your trophies further than rushing ahead.

Clans, Events and Store Offers

Starter Deck Layout

Joining a clan lets you request cards and trade donations. It also gives you friendly battles for practice. Many active clans of Clash Royale players run Discord servers for war coordination and deck reviews. Clan leaders often use “discord bots for gaming” to track war participation.

The in-game shop rotates offers on a timer, much like the “fortnite item shop“. Check the gold-per-gem value before any purchase. Early on, card upgrades matter more than cosmetics.

Safe and Fair Play

Link your account to Supercell ID through Settings so you can recover it on a new phone. For account problems, use Help and Support inside the game settings.

Stay safe

Free gem generators and “account boosters” are scams that steal logins. Supercell ID uses verification codes rather than passwords, so never share a code with anyone, and buying or selling accounts breaks the terms of service.

FAQ

What is the best elixir cost for a beginner deck?

Aim for 3.0 to 3.8. That range lets you defend and counterattack without being caught empty when the enemy pushes.

How many cards are in a Clash Royale deck?

Eight. You see four at a time, and cards cycle back in the order you play them.

Should I spend gems on chests?

Usually not. Gems give you more value on gold for upgrades or on event entries. Chests give random cards, and you won’t use most of them.

How do I stop losing trophies?

Stick to one deck, upgrade it, and take a break after three straight losses. Watch your replays to see which matchups beat you.
